Chennai’s Fresh Milk Revolution: Delivering 7,000 Litres of Fresh Cow Milk Without Owning Cattle

When we started Uzhavarbumi, our goal was simple but powerful to make sure farmers always get a fair price for their produce. That vision shaped everything we do today. Read, Why we do what we do?. But here’s something that surprises many: we don’t own a single cow. Most people who first hear about us instantly ask, “Can we visit your farm?” The truth is, you can’t. Because we don’t have one.
So how do we deliver fresh cow milk in Chennai, every single morning, without even having our own farm? The answer lies in the people we trust the most: our farmers.
Why we work with farmers, not our own cattle
We procure Fresh milk from small farmers, many of whom own just 1–3 cows. Their cows are not part of some large herd; they’re family.
If you’ve ever had a pet, you’ll understand. The way you care for your dog or cat at home is far more personal and loving than how they’d be treated in a shelter with dozens of others. The same applies here. Cows raised by small farmers receive individual attention, they’re fed on time, groomed, given clean water, and cared for if they fall sick. Each animal is more than just “livestock.” She is part of the household.
Now imagine us running a farm with even 10, 20, or 50 cows. That’s like a classroom full of children. Even with manpower, the love and personal attention won’t match what a farmer gives his own two or three cows. This is why we never chose to run a big farm because cows thrive best when they’re part of a family, not part of a factory.

Challenges We Overcame
Choosing not to own cattle wasn’t the easy way out. In fact, it made things harder.
- Initially, we weren’t able to get milk from farmers; earning their trust and convincing them to supply to us was a struggle.
- Customers doubted us: “How do you guarantee quality if you don’t have your own cows?”
- Managing milk collection from 3,000+ farmers spread across villages took effort and organization.
- Ensuring fairness meant paying higher than market rates to farmers, which left us with thinner margins.
Many brands that started like us with glass bottles and farmer-first models eventually gave up because it wasn’t easy to sustain. But we crossed those hurdles, and today, we’re proud to say we still stand strong without regrets.
Take a look at the quiet pride behind the bottles.
What do we mean by “fair price”?
We give a fair price to farmers. What does this really mean? We pay our farmers more than most of the other dairy procuring centers. We pay the farmers every 10 days once. Fair price isn’t just a phrase for us. Over 55% of our turnover goes directly to farmers. How is that possible?
We have nearly 3000 local farmers giving us milk day in and day out. An average of 134 litres per month comes from each of our farmers: proof that even small farmers make a big difference.
But it wasn’t always this way. In the beginning, we struggled to even get milk from farmers. They had been used to selling to the same local buyers for years, even if the price was unfair. When we approached them, they hesitated. Why trust a new company? Would we really pay on time? Would we stay consistent?
It took patience, conversations, and a lot of proof of action. Slowly, farmer by farmer, they started believing in us. Today, that trust is what makes Uzhavarbumi possible.
And here’s why that matters to you: when farmers feel secure, they don’t cut corners. They feed their cows better, they maintain hygiene, and they produce milk with love, not desperation.
Watch what our farmers say about us
Do our cows eat plastics like city cows?
This is a genuine concern. We get asked this by our customers. In Chennai, it’s common to see cows feeding on garbage. But the cows we source milk from live in Maduranthakam and Chengalpattu, where greenery is abundant. Farmers here let their cows graze freely on grass, provide natural fodder, and care for them like family. Clean water, open fields, and fresh air are part of their daily lives.
This is why our milk is:
- Free from adulterants and chemicals
- Untouched by artificial hormones or boosters
- Naturally rich in taste and nutrition

Why small farmers matter to the future
Beyond purity, this model supports something much bigger. India’s smallholder farmers are the backbone of rural life. By working with them, we:
- Keep traditional cattle care alive
- Prevent migration from villages to cities by giving farmers a steady income
- Create a supply chain that is more sustainable and rooted in community values
Every glass of Uzhavarbumi's Fresh Cow Milk you drink doesn’t just nourish your family; it sustains a farmer’s family, too.
The bigger picture for you
At the end of the day, you are not just buying milk from us. You are choosing:
- Fresh cow milk that is truly cared for from farm to fridge
- A system where farmers are respected and rewarded fairly
- A model where cattle are treated like family, not machines
- A cleaner, healthier alternative free from shortcuts and compromises
We may not own a farm, but we own something more powerful, the trust of nearly 3,000 farmers and 16,000+ families who believe in the same values.
And that’s what makes our milk truly special.
