Uzhavarbumi is the epitome of serendipity! When a group of software professionals from Chennai started the Vivasaayanadu Trust, an initiative to protect underprivileged farmers from debt-traps, the consequently increasing number of suicides and preserve natural resources, they stumbled upon the extremely prevalent issue of adulteration in farm food products, and that is how Uzhavarbumi was born!

The widespread reach of these impure food products is what motivated the owners to promote the idea of direct trade between farmers and consumers without middlemen. This ensures that the farmers get a fair price for their produce and consumers get farm-fresh products with ample convenience!

Access to absolutely natural cow’s milk is a hard task in this highly commercialised market. Increasing number of adulterants like urea, toxins, soap, starch and other chemicals like formalin make the milk impure, and more often than not, the quality of the milk is simply deteriorated by adding water to increase the quantity and decrease the quality of real milk that reaches you. These chemicals can prove to be hazardous for you and your loved ones.

Adulteration in cow’s milk has become so common that often it goes unnoticed. Find how the milk you consume for all its good qualities can be contaminated:

·         Addition of detergent

Detergent is often added to milk to give it a foamy look and to enhance the whiteness and thickness. It also serves the purpose of increasing the shelf life of the milk when it is to be transported.

Harmful effects:

Detergent is not a product suitable for consumption, for obvious reasons. Moreover, it can cause Gastro-intestinal and kidney problems and has also been linked to Asthma and increased hyperactivity in children.

·         Addition of Urea

Urea is one of the most common adulterants for milk as it is easily available, provides whiteness and increases the consistency of milk. It also improves the solid-not-fat (SNF) percentage to imitate natural milk.

Harmful effects:

Urea overburdens the kidney and can even lead to grave issues like kidney failure and impairment.

·         Addition of Formalin

Formalin serves the purpose of increasing the shelf life of milk for long-distance transportation across cities.

Harmful effects:

Formalin as a chemical is highly toxic for the human body. It can lead to problems relating to the liver and kidney damage.

·         Addition of Ammonium Sulphate

Ammonium Sulphate is another chemical that is used as an adulterant to increase the lactometer reading of the milk, maintaining its density for long durations of time. It is a neurotoxin and can be extremely harmful if consumed in large quantities.

Harmful effects:

Ammonium Sulphate has many diseases and banes associated with it such as:

Ø  Irritation in the gastro-intestinal tract

Ø  Nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea

Ø  Behavioural change and confusion (as it is a neurotoxin)

·         Excess starch

Adding starch to milk increases the quantity and helps maintain SNF values in synthetic milk.

Harmful effects:

It can cause diarrhoea due to the effect of undigested starch in colon. The accumulation of starch in the body can prove to be fatal for diabetic patients.

·         Carbonates and Bicarbonates

Carbonates and bicarbonates mask the pH and acidity values of badly preserved milk pass it off as fresh milk.

Harmful effects:

The addition of carbonates and bicarbonates can cause disruption in hormone signalling that regulate development of the body and reproduction.

Modern dairies have become profit-oriented and do not aim to provide fresh products to the customers. Ø  Improved Metabolism:  Beta Casein is a slow digesting protein which is great for a workout diet! It improves body metabolism and helps in weight loss by decreasing body fat. Milk can thus act as a great appetizer!

Cold pressed Sesame/Gingelly oil is one of the traditionally used oils in India, just like coconut oil. It is a multi-purpose oil that can be put to use in cooking, on the skin and in various other ways! The making of Uzhavarbumi’s cold-pressed oil is its biggest pro, as it follows a distinct process that preserves all nutrients and benefits that are otherwise lost during the heated processing.

Chekku oil is one of the oils that is traditionally extracted by maintaining the temperature at room-temp level. The eradication of heating helps retain natural colour, texture, nutrients and flavour, and even helps making our lineage stronger.  This is the reason why oil extraction through a cold-pressed mechanism is much more beneficial.

For sesame oil, the fresh seeds are cleaned and then sundried. This drying process is very important for the resulting taste and quality of the oil. The dried sesame is then placed into a woodpress (Marachekku) and pressed with Palm Jaggery (Panai Karuppatti). This pressing yields oil with retained proteins, which consequently benefits the body.
